Post subject:  Your First Map

If you're here, you came to learn to map, mapping takes time, patience, and devotion. If you think you have all three, you came to the right place.

First of all, get this very nice map-editor SCMDraft, this is a safe link made by yours truely so take a look.
http://www.mediafire.com/?ijwhzilimj4

First off, fire it up. It has everything you need for a successful map.
Next off go to File>New, you will be prompted with a screen that looks like this:
[img]mapsizes.jpg[/img]
You notice it probably doesn't make a lot of sense. But read closely and it actually does.
Scenario size has to be a size of 64 96 128 192 and 256, (they can be in any order 64x96 64x256 so on.) Below that you see a bunch of Scenario Terrains. Jungle is the most common so we'll start with that. Set Scenario Size to Length: 128 Width: 128. and Scenario Terrain to Jungle and Water.

When you do this you should have a bunch of water and a Terrain tool pulled down with different Terrains. Like this: [img]Terrain%20Tool.jpg[/img]
Click on Jungle, 4th from the bottom. You will see a rhombus like shape pop up, this is the Isometrical terrain tool. It's the easiest to use to make random terrain with edges. If you have problems using it though, you can switch to a Square terrain tool. Using the Isometrical tool, make a diamond shaped island.

Now this is where it gets fun. Close the Terrain tool by clicking "Terrain" at the top, and click Units.
This is your collection of place-able units. You see the three races, neutral, and undefined. You won't use Undefined much. Neutral consists of critters, doors, traps, etc. and The three races hold the units of the three races (Duh) Click on Zerg. You'll see a series of units categories, and an asterisk. The asterisk is for un-commandable units such as the Zerg Egg, Cocoon, and Larva. Bring down Ground Units. You see every unit in Zerg that uses it's legs as a primary traveling tool. Now click on Zerg Zergling. All the terrain you CANNOT place that Zergling on instantly goes dark. Everything that isn't darkened out is available for our Lone Zergling. Place as many as you like on our little island, then right click to stop placing Zerglings.

Close on Zerg and move to Terran. Here you see even MORE tools like Add-ons. Open the Buildings tool. Here you see every build-able building on the Terran race. Now before you do anything else look below Triggers and you'll see "Player 1" Set that to "Player 2" and pick up a Command Center. Place one anywhere on the island. SCM will let you stack buildings so you can do that too. You can even place a few marines to protect that Command Center from those darned Zerglings. Oh by the way, I forgot to mention you HAVE to place Starting Locations (Found in the Neutral Units Section) otherwise no units will show up. Put one down for EVERY ACTIVE PLAYING PLAYER (Including Computers)

Now the trickiER part. Go into Triggers, BE SURE YOU USE CLASSIC TRIGGER EDITOR, you will see the three default triggers. Click on those and hit the Delete button. Don't worry this won't do anything but let Player 1 play past the first 5 seconds. Then close out of the Trigger Editor.

Then click on Scenario in the taskbar of SCMDraft, and go to Map Description.
You will get something like:
[img]map%20description.jpg[/img]
On Player 1, change the "Owner" to "Computer" and set everyone else (except player 2) to inactive. Next go to File>Save As. Name your map whatever you like. But make sure your saving to your Starcraft Download section, anywhere else you can't host it from.

Get on Starcraft and play as Player 2 defending your Command Center from the evil zerglings!

P.S. The best way to get better at map-making is ask questions and fiddle around with SCMDraft, This is a good start and I will give you more in-depth tutorials in the future, for now, just fiddle with SCMDraft! Any questions I will answer!

I'm amazed I know more about BBCode than you, Mike. To make it an image, you type the full URL, within
Code:
"[img]" and "[/img]"
, not just the filename. For example, to make the X4Point Productions logo-header at the top of the page, type this:

Code:
[img]http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/5313/x4pointicon.png[/img]

Then, that should make the following.

Image

To not make it so you don't have to type the whole Image URL every time, try copying or cutting and pasting the link(Ctrl+C/Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V on Windows, Cmd+C/Cmd+X and Cmd+V on Mac).

Hope that helped! ;)
